Closure for Ireland Bookmakers Caused by COVID-19

There were 26,688 new COVID-19 cases registered in the United Kingdom on 21 October. This has prompted the nation to raise the level of exposure to coronavirus, introducing its "level 5" shutdown protocols in an attempt to stave off a greater rise.

That has already prompted Wales to announce the closure of its gambling shops, as well as no small amount in England, which saw much of the rise. Next to collapse is Ireland, which has announced its bookmakers are following suit and will be closing temporarily.

It is worth noting that the decision to close casinos and wagering shops in Liverpool was made on October 14.

All the gambling institutions will feel the pinch, especially those who have gone out of their way to implement health and safety initiatives to fight COVID-19. One of them is BoyleSports, one of Ireland's main leading teams, painting a bleak picture of the future of the business as a result of the losses and the extra cost it will not be able to recover now. It acknowledges that the backlash would have a "very significant effect" on both its business and the industry as a whole.

After the decision for Ireland to step back, BoyleSports issued a statement saying:

"BoyleSports has spent over 1 million euros over the last six months to make our stores a healthy place for our customers. On our counters and between computers, we have put up new displays, installed hand sanitizing stations and placed comprehensive signage in every market.

At the same time, we have greatly reduced the number of individuals tolerated at any point in every boylesports shop to ensure consistency with all requirements for public health. We look forward to our shops reopening in ireland on december 1st."
