Study Argues Traditional Gambling Signals Restrict the Loss of Players
2020-10-07

Study Claims Frequent Gambling Messages Limit Player Losses

A recent research by Australian University of Sydney - Sally M. Gainsbury and Robert M. Heirene - explored how gambling signals that encourage restrictions affect gamblers' behaviour.

Study Investigates The Effect Of Gambling Messages

A recent Brain & Mind Center pre-print research, School of Psychology, Science Faculty, University of Sydney, Australia, investigated the effect of signals encouraging gambling restrictions on gambling behaviour. Sally M. Gainsbury and Robert M. Heirene's analysis showed that delivering messages to consumers is an economical approach that "can lead to small but impactful increases in the uptake of deposit limits on gambling sites." In the latest analysis engaged four australian sporting and racing wagering websites.

Minimizing the harm associated with online gaming can be done with the aid of deduction caps but consumers' voluntary support is too poor. That is one of the reasons why the research sought to assess the efficacy of sending messages to clients supporting deposit limitations. In addition, the preprint research has aimed to investigate the effects of the gambling restrictions on clients' behaviour.

To contact the consumers, messages were sent via e-mail or in-account notification to selected individuals. There were 3 types of primary messages:

1. Informative messages - outlining the purpose and availability of the deposit limit tool

2. Social messages - describing the benefits which people have from using the tool

2. Personal messages - sharing the individual benefits which people that use the tool receive

Hypotheses studies involved 31,989 participants. In the last 30 days, each participant has made bets for a minimum of 5 days. The overall number of applicants has been limited to 26,516 since the test for fitness. Researchers have compiled pre- and post-messages of customer account data over a span of 90 days. There was also created a control group of participants for individuals who did not get the texts. For comparison of the outcomes the control group was tracked.

Setting deposit limits was associated with decreased gambling intensity, expenditure, and losses and may therefore be an effective harm-reduction strategy,”

Robert M. Heirene and Sally M. Gainsbury

The study showed that within five days of receiving the messages, 161 or 0.71% of the consumers behaved and set a deposit limit. It was further decided that customers receiving the in-account message were more likely to set a deposit cap than those receiving the message by e-mail. The content of the letter did not have a noticeable effect on the clients taking up deposit caps. The study observed substantial reductions in average daily wager volume by applying the outcomes of a randomly chosen customer without a fixed cap, focusing on the customers who set limits.

As a proportion of the population Australia leads the way in the number of gamblers. The nation has the largest per capita gaming losses, which is about $24 billion a year. As a consequence, the damage and the issues associated with gambling are common. Recently, a study published by Australia's National Research Organization for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) highlighted a link between problem gambling and domestic abuse.
